As a typology, the carriage house (or accessory dwelling unit) has been restricted by-right to be built in Detroit as a provision of it’s zoning code since the 1970s. As of 2020 however, the City plans to revise this provision to allow carriage houses to be constructed in specific Detroit neighborhoods. This carriage house is set to be constructed by the owner of the main property along a rear alley in 2021.
